| Special features of M.Sc. Programme
Special Papers
Students are required to select one of the following
papers as their special papers in M.Sc. (Final). Most of the special
papers are directly related to the main areas of research being pursued
in the department. Thus, a student can opt for any special paper of his
interest from those offered by the department. This enables him to
closely interact with research groups in the department and gives an
opportunity to learn first-hand from the faculty members and research
scholars.
Project
Students are required to complete one project during
the two years of their M.Sc. course. The project must be of good
standard involving about 200 hrs of work by the candidate. Students are
normally encouraged to select projects in any one of the ongoing
research programme under a faculty member of their choice. Through
project work students are trained in use of sophisticated research
equipments, design and construction of equipments and experiments,
preparation and characterization of new materials etc.
Seminars
Every student admitted to the course is required give
four seminars in a year. These seminars are aimed to develop in-depth
subject knowledge and skill. Besides subject expertise, they help train
students in the presentation and communication skill.
Internal Assessment
In addition to class room lectures and practical
classes, problem solving, seminars, tutorials, oral examinations,
periodic examinations etc are essential components of Physics teaching.
Department has incorporated these components in the M.Sc. curricula. In
every theory paper, 25 percent of total marks are awarded through
internal assessment. Internal marks are awarded by a committee of
faculty members as per well defined guidelines.
Computing Skills
Department has excellent computing facilities which
include more than 50 Pentium 4 computers, workstations and servers. M.Sc.
students are trained in modern computational methods and computer
programming. Special facilities are available for M.Sc. students to
acquire competency in specialized areas of Informatics by participating
in training programmes and workshops. Depending on the competency
acquired in computing, candidates with M.Sc. Physics often find
lucrative jobs in the Information Technology area.
Laboratory facilities
Undergraduate and Postgraduate laboratory facilities
have been developed such that students get very good training in
experimental physics. Thanks to the UGC COSIST and DST FIST programme,
the labs are well equipped and contain a variety of experiments. Most of
the sophisticated research equipments are also open to M.Sc. students
for their practical training.
MOU with Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad
The university is under an MOU with Physical Research
Laboratory, Ahmedabad under which various facilities of the institute
are extended to our students and faculties. Scientists from PRL
regularly visit our Department and students gets opportunity to interact
with these scientists. Our students also get an opportunity to work at
PRL, Ahmedabd to complete summer projects.
Library and Internet Access
Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur is one of the
first few universities in the country which has a campus network.
Students can access internet either from their Laboratories or from
library. All M.Sc. students are provided with computer accounts free of
charge and they can use Internet to access unlimited resources available
in the form of subject literature, research papers, journals, books,
lecture notes, tutorials, computer program etc. The department has a
special student library in addition to the department, College and
Central libraries to provide specialized and rare books, lecture notes
etc.
Communication Skill and Personality Development
Excellent communication skill is an important factor
in getting good placement in the industry. The seminars, oral tests etc.
included as part of curricular infrastructure provide communication
skill required for teaching and research positions. Besides, a
communication skill Laboratory has been included, where students are
trained in TOFEL level English. Today, Personality Development is an integral part of
many professional courses like MCA, M.Sc.(Electronics),
M.Sc.(Information Technology) etc. Since the Physics department is
managing these professional courses in the university, the M.Sc.(Physics)
students are also allowed to attend these classes on payment of a
nominal fee.
